Since the very early days of jazz, jam sessions have played an important role in the development of the jazz art form and the skill of its performers. The tradition is to form ensembles created on the spot to perform tunes that are usually well known to the performers.
The musicians can do this any way they like, but the usual form is for the musicians to perform the main theme of the piece as a group, with each musician playing an improvised solo based on the theme. Then the group returns to the main theme.
Participation in jam sessions can present a challenging learning and musical growth opportunity for even the most advanced and professional performing artists. The artistic outcome changes constantly, with the combination of instruments/voices and the skill of the musicians. But at JazzWorks jam sessions the aim is to provide a supportive climate for all musicians, regardless of skill level.
How to participate:
Jazz musicians — instrumentalists and singers — of all ages are welcome to attend. The host band begins performing at 8:00.

For Host Bands:
Play a one-hour set beginning at 7:30pm
Please provide a keyboard, drums and bass, plus three music stands, that others can use in the jam.
The rhythm section should be well prepared to back up vocalists and instrumentalists, and have a good supply of fakebooks.
The band members must be prepared to remain at the jam until the end
– 11:30 pm.
